Everything you expect. Nothing you have to give up.
Text, voice, calls, groups, photos and files, on both phones, built on a foundation that keeps you private.
Everything you reach for, every day.
Text
One to one and in groups, encrypted end to end and carried over Tor.
Voice notes
Record, send and play, in chats and in groups.
Photos, from the camera or the gallery
A camera inside the app. Location and camera details are removed from pictures before they leave your phone.
Files
Send documents and other files. They go exactly as they are: Avano removes hidden data from photos and videos, not from a PDF or a Word file, so check those before you send.
Video messages
Record a short clip and send it.
Your location, once
Share where you are as a single message. Nothing keeps tracking you afterwards.
Replies, edit, unsend
Quote a message, correct one you sent, or ask for it to be taken back.
Reactions
A quick reaction, one per message.
Search
Find anything across all your conversations. Avano decrypts your messages in memory to search them and keeps no index.
Disappearing messages
Set a timer and messages delete themselves on both phones.
Read receipts and typing
See when your messages were read, in one-to-one chats. Typing indicators are yours to switch on.
Reminders
Ask to be reminded about a chat later. The notification shows only the app's name.
Drafts, archive, block
Unsent text is kept per chat, archived chats leave the list, and a blocked contact simply disappears.
Light and dark
Both themes, following your phone or set by hand.
Groups you can trust.
Create, invite, leave
Make a group, invite people with a link, leave whenever you want.
Administration
Add and remove members, rename the group, hand it over to someone else.
Everyone sees the same thing
Every member can check that the whole group is seeing the same conversation. Something most encrypted messengers cannot promise.
Catching up
A phone that missed part of a group asks for what it lacks, instead of silently showing a gap.
Star and pin
Star a message for yourself, or pin one for the group.
Voice notes, photos and files
The same attachments as one-to-one chats, delivered to every member.
Voice calls, private by default.
Voice calls, one to one
End-to-end encrypted with post-quantum key agreement, and relayed so that neither caller learns the other's address.
What the call relay sees
Calls travel outside Tor, so the call relay sees your network address, and the other caller's, for the length of the call and up to about a minute after it. It never hears or sees what is said, and the app tells you before every call.
Video calls
AndroidOne to one, through the same call relay, at a fixed rate for the whole call, so the traffic does not follow the picture. Not on iPhone yet.
No number, no account, and still a way back.
No phone number, no email
Your identity is created on your phone from twenty-four words. Nothing is registered anywhere.
Invitation links
Add someone with a one-time link. It stops working the moment it is used.
QR codes, face to face
Both phones show a code and read one. Done in seconds.
Safety numbers
Compare a number in person or scan it, and you know nobody sits in the middle.
Profile photos and names
Set on your phone and sent only to your contacts. There is no profile on any server.
Recovery
Your twenty-four words bring your identity back on a new phone. Choose trusted friends as recovery helpers and your contacts come back too; any two of them together could read your contact list, so choose people who would not.
Locked means sealed.
A passphrase lock
Your passphrase is tied to a key held in the phone's hardware. Locked, everything is sealed and the keys are gone from memory.
Lock it from outside the app
AndroidA quick-settings tile locks Avano without opening it. On the iPhone, the app locks itself the moment it leaves the screen.
The vault
A second door inside the app, with its own passphrase, for documents that stay on your phone unless you share one, sealed, with a contact.
Erase everything
One action removes the account, the messages, the keys and every file the app made.
Private by default. Everywhere.
Tor for every message
Built into the app, no separate install. Our relay is reached only as an onion service, so it never learns your address.
Bridges, and your own proxy
AndroidWhere Tor is blocked, paste a bridge line or point the app at a proxy you already run. The iPhone screen for this is coming.
Cover traffic
While Avano is open it sends at a steady rate, so someone watching your connection cannot tell when you send a message. Photos and files still upload in a burst when you send them. Free, and on by default.
No push service
Neither Apple nor Google is told a message arrived for you. On Android the app alerts you itself, saying only its own name; on iPhone it shows no alert yet, so a message waits until you open Avano.
Stay connected
AndroidWith message alerts on, an optional service keeps Avano receiving in the background, even on a locked phone, for up to 24 hours after you last open it.
Post-quantum encryption
Protection on the key exchange and on every message after it, for the years ahead.
On the way, and by design.
Video calls on iPhone
ComingOn Android now; on iPhone the picture path is not built yet.
A reader in a browser
ComingLinked to your phone. One phone per identity; a second phone at the same time is refused, and there will be no desktop app.
Stickers, GIFs, forwarding
ComingOn the list.
No link previews
By designYour phone never fetches a preview, so no website learns you opened a message.
No cloud backup
By designYour messages exist only on your phone. Nothing to leak, nothing to hand over.
No contact upload
By designYour address book never leaves your phone. You add people with a link or a code.
